College App TrainingThere are five important areas to a great college essay.

  1. Show Don’t Tell – In your first draft, you most likely made many statements that related your experience in general terms. Now it is time to go back and get specific. For example, many students write that they learned from an experience. You want to show exactly what you learned and how it affected you. (For CAT students, this is where your “Using Details” exercise comes in handy.)
  2. Raise the Stakes – A good way to describe a movie is the two most important hours of the protagonist’s life. Your Personal Marketing Statement must be the same way. Whatever you are writing about, it must be really important to you and you must let the reader know. You want to create anticipation and drama. This is what will make the reader, the college admissions officer, interested in your essay and be more likely to remember it against the thousands of other essays. (For CAT students, this is where you use your “Preparation and Aftermath” exercise.)
  3. Passion and Personality – The Personal Marketing Statement must reflect your voice and your unique way of telling a story. Don’t be afraid to get creative. This is not an academic essay, so you can play with phrasing, dialogue, etc. Most of all, you want your writing to reveal you – who you are, how you think, how you see the world etc. Also, don’t be afraid to show vulnerability. This is not the same as showing weakness. Many students think they have to write that they have solved all the world’s problems by the time they are seventeen. Not true (and also not possible). It is much more compelling to show a challenge and how you overcame that challenge. (For CAT students, this is where you use your “Most Embarrassing Moment” exercise.)
  4. Me Me Me – Remember, this Personal Marketing Statement is about you. It is one of the few times of your life where you can (and should) always bring the point back to you. How do you feel? How do you think? What have you learned?
  5. Length – You have 650 words. That’s it. So you have to cut all non-essential words to get to that length. This is one of the hardest parts of the rewrite process because you will have to cut things you really like. It is also the final step, once your Personal Marketing Statement fulfills the other three rewrite conditions, then it is time to cut to length.
